Emma Smith is seen here writing to her husband, the Prophet Joseph Smith, who was imprisoned on trumped-up charges in the Carthage Jail. Joseph was often taken to court, but in every hearing the case was dismissed due to lack of evidence; and yet he was often held in prison for many months at a time while awaiting trial. In the words of John Taylor:
‘They were innocent of any crime, as they had often been proved before, and were only confined in jail by the conspiracy of traitors and wicked men;’ Doctrine and Covenants 135:7
While Joseph was incarcerated in the Carthage Jail, suffering greatly from mistreatment and barbaric living conditions, Emma often wrote letters of love and encouragement to him.
