This was first serious effort at sculpting; and with no formal training in sculpture at that point, I was frankly amazed by the skill that my fingers seemed to possess without much conscious thought of my own. I have always enjoyed the subtle, homey, humor of Norman Rockwell; and as I remember it, I saw something he had done that depicted a tramp sleeping in a park beside a “keep off the grass” sign. I liked the idea, but I put a fisherman leaning against a “no fishing” sign instead.
